Fun Foot Facts
We are probably a tiny bit biased, but at Northern Rivers Podiatry we think feet are the most fascinating part of the body. They are powerful, intricate, complex, and incredibly supportive to help us get around. To celebrate our much-loved feet, we decided to list some fun foot facts. We hope you get a kick out of them too!
- The feet each have 26 bones, 33 joints and over 100+ ligaments!
- The average person walks around 7500 steps per day, that’s equivalent to around 5 laps of the Earth’s equator in a person’s lifetime!
- Between the left and right foot morphology, there is always some difference as no two feet are the same!
- 20 intrinsic foot muscles work to move your feet!
- The foot has more nerve endings per square centimetre than any other part of the body. No wonder they are so ticklish!
- The skin on your feet is thicker than any other body part!
- When running, up to 4 times your body weight can be the pressure amount placed on your feet!
- Each foot has around 125,000 sweat glands. That’s more glands per square centimetre than any other part of they body. These glands produce around 230ml of sweat every single day!
- Around about 20% to 30% of the world’s population’s second toe is longer than their big toe!
- The Achilles tendon gets the award for the strongest tendon in the whole body!
- It’s pretty slow going, but it can take 12 to 18 months for a toenail to completely regrow.
- Foot massages can improve someone’s mood and overall health!
